Hedge Trimming Policy
Cutleaf Lawn Care & Garden Services
At Cutleaf, we believe regular hedge maintenance is the key to creating healthy, attractive and long-lasting hedges.
This policy explains how our hedge trimming services are carried out, what clients can expect, and why some hedge work requires multiple visits to achieve the best result.
This policy should be read together with our Terms & Conditions. Where there is any inconsistency, our Terms & Conditions take precedence.
-
Every hedge is different.
The species, age, health, growth rate and previous maintenance all influence how a hedge should be managed.
Our goal is not simply to make a hedge smaller, but to improve its health, shape, density and long-term appearance.
-
Depending on your requirements, hedge trimming may include:
Routine maintenance trimming.
Height reduction.
Width reduction.
Shaping and formal hedge trimming.
Informal hedge maintenance.
Removal of dead or damaged branches.
Seasonal pruning.
Clearance around pathways, driveways and buildings.
Green waste collection (where included in your quote).
Work completed will depend on your service agreement and the condition of the hedge.
-
Regular trimming encourages:
Denser foliage.
Stronger branching.
Improved appearance.
Better long-term health.
Reduced risk of major corrective pruning.
Most hedges benefit from being trimmed several times throughout the growing season rather than receiving one large annual cut.
-
Reducing the height of a hedge is significantly different from routine trimming.
Large reductions often expose older timber that has little or no foliage.
Some hedge species recover quickly, while others may take months or even years to regenerate.
For this reason, significant reductions may be completed over multiple visits to reduce stress on the plant and encourage healthier regrowth.
-
Overgrown hedges may require side reductions to restore clearance around:
Buildings.
Fences.
Footpaths.
Driveways.
Utility infrastructure.
Large reductions may temporarily expose internal branches before new growth develops.
-
Whenever possible, hedge trimming is planned to minimise stress on the plant.
Factors we consider include:
Species.
Seasonal conditions.
Recent weather.
Current plant health.
Previous pruning history.
Where heavy pruning could significantly affect the health of the hedge, we may recommend staged reductions or an alternative maintenance plan.
-
Not all hedges recover at the same rate.
For example:
Lilly Pilly generally responds well to regular trimming and can recover strongly from reductions.
Photinia produces vigorous new growth when pruned correctly.
Pittosporum often tolerates moderate reductions.
Conifers and cypress hedges may not regenerate from old bare timber.
Before major reductions, we will discuss what can realistically be achieved for your particular hedge.
-
The timing of hedge trimming affects both appearance and plant health.
Spring
Ideal for encouraging strong new growth after winter.
Summer
Suitable for maintaining shape and controlling rapid growth.
Extra care may be required during periods of extreme heat.
Autumn
Useful for tidying growth before winter and reducing excessive seasonal growth.
Winter
Many species can be structurally pruned during dormancy, while others should be left until warmer weather.
Recommendations vary depending on the hedge species.
-
Some hedges produce flowers on either old or new growth.
Heavy pruning at the wrong time of year may reduce or eliminate flowering for the current season.
If maintaining flowers is important to you, please let us know before work begins.
-
For the healthiest results, most formal hedges are maintained slightly wider at the base than at the top.
This allows sunlight to reach the lower foliage and helps prevent thinning near ground level.
Where possible, we will maintain this natural taper unless instructed otherwise.
-
Major hedge reductions require additional labour and equipment.
These services may include:
Chainsaw work.
Pole hedge trimmers.
Ladders or elevated platforms.
Multiple clean-up stages.
Green waste removal.
Large reductions are generally quoted separately from routine maintenance.
-
Small amounts of hedge trimmings may be placed in the client's green waste bin where available.
Where large quantities of material are generated, removal and disposal may be charged separately unless included in your quotation.
-
Hedges often provide habitat for birds and other wildlife.
If active nests or protected wildlife are identified during the work, trimming may be postponed or modified where required by law or for animal welfare.
-
To assist us in completing your hedge trimming safely, we ask clients to:
Unlock gates where required.
Move vehicles away from work areas.
Secure pets.
Remove fragile items located beneath hedges.
Advise us of any hidden irrigation, lighting or services.
If safe access cannot be provided, work may need to be postponed.
-
Our team may take photographs before, during and after hedge trimming.
These photographs assist with:
Documenting completed work.
Quality assurance.
Client communication.
Future maintenance planning.
Training.
Photographs are managed in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
-
Healthy hedges improve over time through consistent maintenance.
Immediately after trimming, some hedges—particularly those that have been neglected or heavily reduced—may appear sparse or uneven as older internal growth is exposed.
This is a normal part of the recovery process for many species.
With appropriate aftercare and ongoing maintenance, new growth will gradually fill in and improve the overall appearance.
-
To help us provide the best results, clients should:
Clearly communicate any preferred finished height or shape before work begins.
Advise us if flowering should be preserved.
Ensure safe access to the work area.
Notify us of any concerns before trimming commences.
-
If you are unsure how often your hedge should be trimmed or are considering reducing the size of an established hedge, our team is happy to provide professional advice and recommend a maintenance schedule suited to your property.
